INTERSEX AWARENESS DAY!

About this event:
Intersex Aotearoa are hosting an online film festival on the 25th, 26th and 27th of October for Intersex Awareness Day 2021.
Three films are to be screened over three consecutive nights, showcasing stories full of the humbling (and sometimes harrowing) lived experiences of intersex folk, coupled with moments of connection, resistance, magical encounters, and community pride. Set up as a Watch Party on zoom; you can join Intersex MC’s Mikayla and Jelly as they showcase three films and share interviews with cast and crew!

Kicking off on the 25th of October with the award-winning documentary ‘Orchids’, we trace Phoebe Hart’s voyage of self-discovery as an intersex person. Learning only in her teens that she was born with 46XY (male) chromosomes, Hart now seeks to understand her own story and the stories of others affected by their intersex diagnosis and lived experiences. We will be joined after the screening by Phoebe and their sibling Bonnie, who are both intersex super stars in this film, and out in the world.

At the second event on the 26th of October (INTERSEX AWARENESS DAY!!!) we are excited to present the Aotearoa first screening of Ponyboi, a fictional short film written by and starring River Gallo. “Ponyboi is an intersex runaway. He works at a laundromat and hustles as sex-worker. But after a mysterious encounter with a man from his dreams, he learns that perhaps he is worthy of leaving his seedy life in New Jersey behind. ”

Our third event on the 27th of October showcases the award-winning feature length Intersexion. Staring our very own Aotearoa intersex legend Mani Bruce Mitchell, Intersexion follows Mani while they and writer and director Grant Lahood set out to “de-mystify” intersex, looking “beyond the shame and secrecy that defines many intersex births”. The film follows Mitchell on a tour, visiting intersex people in America, Ireland, Germany, South Africa and Australia.

All films will be followed by an interview with select cast and creators, and a Q&A session.

This event is a fundraiser for Intersex Youth Aotearoa, a non-profit project that is part of the Intersex Trust Aotearoa New Zealand (ITANZ)
